Information about the Elves Club Telethon 2011

IDo you play an instrument? Have a band? Do magic or gymnastics? You need to register for this year’s Elves Talent Competition today! This year’s Elves Talent Competition auditions will be held at the Gibsons Legion Hall on October 15, from 10 am to 6 pm, with music provided by Vocal Motion Entertainment. The Telethon is set to air live from the Heritage Playhouse on December 3, from 2 pm to 8 pm, should there be enough contestants participating. So far, the numbers are down – which just means each contestant stands a better chance!

Deanna Hoversland, who is a volunteer treasurer for the Elves Club, is the contact person for this event. You can reach her by email at: hovers@telus.net or by phone at 604-886-6722.
The Elves Club delivered 760 Christmas food hampers last year, which included toys and 10-pound turkeys, and they anticipate at least that many or more hampers will be needed this year as the economy on the Coast has not markedly improved over last year.

The Elves Club talent competition will have some very well-seasoned artists sitting at the judge’s table this year. Verna Chan, David Hayes and Niv Harris all have an amazing number of credits to their names as is evidenced by the brief bios they submitted to the Elves Club organizers:

Verna Chan, a Jazz-R&B, blues singer and vocal coach, has performed at venues throughout BC including Vancouver venues such as Hogan's Alley, the Blue Note, Basin Street, the Glass Slipper, the Arts Club Backstage Lounge, the Purple Onion, the South Hill Candy Shop, the Hot Jazz Club, Hotel Vancouver, The Four Seasons and the Bayshore with musicians such as Lorne Kellet, Chris Sigerson, Peter Dent, Budge Shachte, Craig Scott, Rick Kilburn, Randall Stall,
Andre Lachance, Gary Mussatto, Karen Graves and many others.

Verna has resided on the Sunshine Coast for over 10 years and produced and judged The Sunshine Coast Idol and Sunshine Coast Youth Idol productions. She is currently working on completing her 1st CD of original music with musicians Sacha Fassaert, Paul Steenhuis, Doug Howden and Walter Martella --which is set for a Spring 2012 release.

Also judging will be David Hayes, who lives in Garden Bay and is the co-owner of Rock Beach Recording Studio in White Rock. David has been hired independently by Artists and Record Companies to record in various cities including L.A., New York, Vancouver, Toronto. Hayes co-wrote and Directed “Janice’s Attic”, a 13 show television series. He also did sound design for various feature films, documentaries, TV series and commercials. Hayes had a grammy nomination for Best Sound for the.,TV show “Bordertown” (Mixer) The Little Mountain Sound Company, Vancouver. Niv is currently a member the Coast Phoenix Singers and Gibsons United Sanctuary choir.

Among the prizes already slated for the Talent Competition, two stand out as definite keepers: Sage Productions will give four hours of free recording time for a band, which works out to about half the time needed for a full band to lay down a recording. Ocean Beach Resort and Spa in Powell River has offered a stay at their luxurious resort as another great prize. If your business would like to donate a prize or cash towards the Elves Club Telethon, please contact Deanna Hoversland.
